finding the sweetness within the chaos with abbey neves
Written by Julianna Bonnett
When 20-year-old gourmet donut maker and entrepreneur, Abbey Neves, began her gourmet baked donuts business, A Hole Lotta Donuts in August 2020, she knew she wanted to provide the community with a sweet little treat during all the chaos.
After her mom purchased a couple epicure silicone donut moulds earlier last summer, Neves was excited to learn how to make and bake some of her own donuts which then turned into something she wanted to pursue further.
“For that entire summer, I was asked left and right if I would sell my donuts, I always said, heck no, I could never do that, she shares. “But one day in August, I was sitting on the couch with my mum, and she looked at me and said, Abbey, just do it. I immediately made my donut Instagram public, made a Facebook page, made an advertisement for my business, and the rest is history.”
Offering almost 30 different flavours of donuts, customers can request a flavour catalog that lists all of the flavour options, and they have free reign to choose whatever flavour their heart desires.
“My flavours range from donuts with fruit in them, such as my pink lemonade donuts (lemon donut with strawberry glaze), to bourbon sugar French toast donuts (a French toast inspired donut with a bourbon infused sugar coating), to funfetti donuts,” she explains. “Every season, I launch about five brand new flavours that are added to my catalog, there’s truly a flavour for everyone.”
Describing herself as kind, passionate and driven, Neves says the communities support along with her family’s endless support has been something that has helped her.
“Ever since I was little, I have always baked with my grandma,” she says. “It was something I always looked forward to doing with her, and I remember being in awe of how much she knew about baking. Even now, I’ll go sleepover at my grandma’s frequently and have a baking date with her. It’s seriously one of my favourite things to do in life. I have the best relationship with my grandma, and I genuinely believe that without her, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
With each of her donuts made for order, Neves pipes homemade batter into a donut pan, bake them in the oven, and hand dips them in their glaze or sugar topping.
“I box the donuts with extreme precision and care, making sure that I am satisfied with where each donut is placed,” she states. “All boxes have a hand written message on them and are sealed with a sticker.”
