HOW TO SUPPORT THE WINDSOR WOMEN WORKING WITH IMMIGRANT WOMEN:
A background on The Windsor Women Working with Immigrant Women:
Established in 1981, Windsor Women Working with Immigrant Women (W5) stands as a dedicated non-profit organization, birthed by a passionate collective of women in Windsor. Recognizing the unmet needs of newcomers to Canada, these visionary women advocated for change. Their efforts resulted in a pivotal grant application showcasing the outcomes of a comprehensive 1981 feasibility study that pinpointed the unique challenges faced by new Canadians in Windsor.
Following this study, a grant was secured in 1982 to host a nationwide conference focused on immigrant needs, attracting participants from across Canada. The conference culminated in a resounding recommendation for an information center specifically tailored to address the challenges encountered by immigrant individuals, foreign students, and workers navigating life in Canada.
In July 1983, the Immigrant Women’s Information Centre opened its doors, initially funded through a CCDP grant from the Canada Employment Centre. Since then, W5 has significantly expanded its reach and program offerings. Today, our organization delivers diverse programming catering to women, men, youth, and seniors in various languages.
As a non-profit and charitable entity, our unwavering commitment lies in delivering exceptional services to immigrant and refugee women and their families. Our multifaceted programs are meticulously designed to meet the evolving needs of our community members, empowering our clients to realize their aspirations and integrate fully into Canadian society. At W5, we pride ourselves on being a beacon of support, nurturing growth, and enabling our clients to achieve their goals within a welcoming and inclusive environment.
