For Owner and Operator of Nour Design, Nourham Shams El-Din, she knew when she started her business in November 2020, she wanted to provide the Muslim community with hijabs that allow women to feel confident and stylish.

After a trip to Egypt, Nourhan made sure she bought as many hijabs as possible for herself, knowing that when she was back in Windsor, she would not be able to shop for hijabs that match many of her outfits, that is when the idea of Nour Design popped into her head.

“Nour Design is an online brand selling a variety of hijabs,” she explains. “I try to incorporate many different styles and colours for every one's taste so everyone can express their own style in their hijab.”

While currently enrolled at the University of Windsor for Mechanical Engineering, Nourhan has a busy schedule but because of her love for working with different colours and shades, she finds it very enjoyable to bring different hijab designs to the community.

“Working with different colours, shades and materials is very enjoyable as it brings out the artsy side of me,” she says. “I don't make them myself, I contact manufacturers to make them and ship them to me to sell.”

Even though Nourhan started her business not too long ago, her advice to any women who has an idea or plan is to just.... go for it.

“Being a woman in business has been going well so far, running a small business on my own can be tough but I would encourage any woman who has an idea and a plan to go for it and not let stereotypes stop them from achieving what they want,” she shares. “Coming from a girl in mechanical engineering, a field where there's almost no other girls, I know it can be tough, but the results are worth it.”

Describing herself as optimistic, hardworking, and friendly, Nourhan says what empowers her most is seeing confidence's exude in other women.

“Whether it's at Nour Design where I encourage Muslim women to be confident in their hijabs, or whether it's at the university in a field with few women, that is where I hope to encourage more women to not let societies stereotypes stop them from doing what they enjoy,” she states.
