How to have a safe halloween

Picture
Halloween is going to look a little different this year.  With COVID still out and about, you're probably wondering what exactly is going on this Halloween.

Is it true that Halloween is cancelled this year?  Is it even safe to go out and trick or treat?

Halloween is going to look different for different people.

Here are some tips and some alternative ideas about what to do to have a safe Halloween this year.

Should I let my kids trick or treat?
When deciding to let your kids trick or treat or not, remember that some people will not give out candy in order to prevent the spread of the virus and other germs.
But some people will still give out treats.  Dress up in an old Halloween costume and take a walk or a drive around the neighbourhood to see which houses still have their porch lights on.

When you walk up to a house, make sure the way is clear.  If there are groups of other families/kids already at a house, make sure you stay back and wait for them to clear out before walking up.

If you let your kids trick or treat, remember to practice social distancing and wear a mask when they walk up to houses.

You can disinfect wrapped candy items, if you choose to,  in order to take extra precautions.

Should I hand out candy?
If you think it's too much of a hassle, you can opt-out from handing out candy this year.

If you want to keep the spirit alive and continue handing out candy to the kids in your neighbourhood, make sure you take safety precautions.

Remember to wear gloves and a mask when handing out candy.  Also, try to find a way to deliver candy at a distance.  Try dropping candy into a long tube, like an empty cardboard tube used for wrapping paper into trick or treat bags.  You can also leave a bowl of candy on the porch for kids to take.

Remember to only hand out wrapped candy, like mini chocolate bars, and not loose items like apples.

Have a Family Halloween Party at home
If you decide not to go out this year, create a fun Halloween with just you and your family.
Have everyone dress up.  Decorate the house.  Put out bowls of snacks.
Since Halloween is on a Saturday this year, you can let your kids stay up late and watch some spooky movies.  You can even let them have a friend or two over.

The 2020 fall lookbook you've been waiting for

With fall in the midst and winter right behind us, finding that trendy outfit to wear during the coldest months isn't easy, especially with the global pandemic still happening, it's not as enjoyable to shop like it used to be.

If you're anything like myself, you like to be a chameleon when it comes to your choose of outfits. Ranging from super girly, to laid back, to early 2000's grudge to something a little more professional!

Check out our four favourite styles for 2020!

Outfit 1

Can I get a yes please? This cute yet super comfortable outfit was a steal from the beginning.

  • Red Calvin Klein Jacket- At Winners ($39.99)
  • Beige Guess Crossbody Purse - At Guess ($39.99)
  • Beige Booties- At Kozmo/ Devonshire Mall ($19.99)

When it comes to looking cute but still professional, this was the perfect find for me. I don't usually dress up like this, but for once in a blue moon, it made me feel comfortable and body positive.

  • Black Army Boots- Winners ($25.00)

Picture
Even though this year isn't like every other year for Halloween, this is the time of year for regrettable costume choices, snacking down on some sweet treats, novelty props for your costume and of course a sick Halloween Playlist that fits your vibes.

Some of the songs on this list are complete classics, from your favourite horror movies, to those creepy and spunky 80's Halloween classic tunes and you know we didn't forget to include The cast of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Including....

1.  Thriller- Michael Jackson
2. Monster Mash-Bobby Pickett
3. Ghostbusters- Ray Parker Jr.
This is one heck of a playlist and trust me when I say, I usually listen to these songs more than once a year.

Follow our playlist of our ultimate Halloween Party Mix on our Spotify page.

Much more than just a diagnosis

Picture
Keeping your mind healthy is a lifetime process. We have all been there, haven’t we? Whether you want to admit it or not, it is easy to get so caught up in life that sometimes you don’t come to the realization that you are allowing your minds to deplete until it becomes severe.

In any given year, studies show that one in five Canadians will suffer from a mental health problem with approximately 8 per cent of adults experiencing major depressive spells at some point in their lives.

Your mental health influences how you feel, act, and perform daily. If we don’t allow ourselves time to focus on our wellness, we will be forced to focus on our illness.

In honour of Mental Health Awareness Week and with today being World Mental Health Day, listed below are some tips we follow to help improve our mental health daily.

Journal.
Seems cliché, I know but you would be surprised to learn that journaling and writing down how you feel throughout you day can be a real life changer when you’re able to reflect back on those notes and highlight what main topics are circling in your mind. Being able to come to the awareness of what is causing you struggle is a big step into becoming healthier in the mind.

Talk to likeminded people.
I know from experience that dealing with your mind constantly telling you lies can be a battle but it can becomes more eye opening when you are able to see that your struggles relate to other peoples own struggles. Whether it be from talking to a close friend, family or getting involved in a community group, sometimes vocalizing your thoughts and feelings can help.

Therapy isn’t a bad thing.
And this takes me to my third point. Look at therapy as a positive enforcement in your life, something that is allowing you a safe space to be open about how you’re feeling. With all the programs and services in your community, you can easily connect with a therapist that can help guide you through your journey to healthier mental health.

Being with nature.
Trust me, I never thought this one could help but it is very beneficial for your mental health. Reflect to when you were a child, a lot of your happiest times was being outside in nature appreciating the little things the world can offer you. Sometimes just stepping into the fresh air can relax your mind more than you think.

Meditation or yoga.
Remember, sometimes our bodies need exercise and a release. Yoga and meditation aren’t for everyone, but studies show that going into a deep meditation has helped many release their inner emotions that they’ve been suppressing for years.

Adult Colouring Books.
This is a high one on our radar. Colouring has the ability to relax the fear center of your brain. Through doing this, many have been able to reduce the endless thoughts rushing through their brain.

Cut out the negative.
I know, this is a tough one. It’s hard coming to the realization that some of the closest people in our lives can be the ones that are hurting our mental state the most. But when it comes to your health, it is important for you to find that balance of what you can allow to affect you and what can not. Choose your battles and who you surround yourself with.

Surround yourself with growing individuals.
Have you ever heard the saying, if you are the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room? This one could not be truer on my journey of growth. When we surround ourselves with others that are not growing, it keeps us in our comfort zone of not stepping out and doing more with ourselves. Get out there and meet new people, people that motivate you, inspire you and drive you to be a better YOU.

Write down what you’re grateful for.
I will not lie, this one I take for granted. When we want more out of life, we never sit back and release what we already have. Running water, a roof over a head, food in our bellies. Here is a simple yet challenging task, each morning or night before going to bed, write down 10 things you’re grateful to have.

 Educate yourself.
I’m not saying you have to take a course on this but when you immense yourself in something you want to learn about, you’ll see your focus shift. Through listening to a mental health podcast, reading books on self care or taking to someone with the experience, you will be able to understand yourself a little bit better and you won’t feel so alone.

Lastly, accept where you are. We get caught up in wanting so much for ourselves that we forget to acknowledge where we are in life. Remember, you are growing every single day and your journey will be different from everyone else and you will continue to grow throughout your journey.

surviving thanksgiving

Picture
The holidays are a time for celebration and to get together with family.  We share a meal, catch up with each other, and enjoy the company.

Although, sometimes, the holidays can come with a lot of stress.  Whether you're the one preparing the feast, interacting with difficult family members, and being overwhelmed by a room full of people, the holidays can be a little stressful.

With Thanksgiving next week, here are some quick tips on making the day go as painless as possible.

If you're the one preparing the big feast, try to prepare as many meals ahead of time.
Cooking a turkey is time-consuming.

A lot of people tend to cook the turkey and other oversized items the day of.
They spend the majority of the day in the kitchen and not enough time enjoying company.
If you're one of these people, try to prepare as much food as you can a day or two before and put in the oven or zap it in the microwave when it's almost time to eat.

Don't be afraid to cook and carve that turkey a day ahead and heat it the next day in the oven. It will still turn out delicious, and you can enjoy your company.

Don't be afraid to accept help from others.
If your mother-in-law pops her head in the kitchen and offers to help you, it's very easy to shoo them off and say, "I've got this."
But giving them tasks like preparing the salad or setting the table can help meal prep go smoother.

Don't be afraid to step out.  This goes for anyone.  If you feel overwhelmed by the number of people in the room, whether you're celebrating at your house or someone else's, it's very easy to feel a little claustrophobic.

Don't be afraid to “hideaway” for a moment to collect yourself.

Find a place where you can get some space.  Sit in an empty bedroom or bathroom or stand on the front porch to get some air, for example.
This can give you a space to get away from the hustle and bustle inside the house.

Remember that everyone will leave.
Some family members are difficult to deal with.  No matter what, they will always feel the need to put their 2 cents into everything.  They'll judge how your house looks, the way you prepared the food, and what you should and shouldn’t be doing.

The same goes for family members who make comments or argue about opposing political views or lifestyle choices.

It's up to you whether to speak up if they cross a line.  You might also decide to just let it slide depending on the comment, since you only see these people once or twice a year.

Remember that they will leave eventually and if you need to, remember to take a step back by finding a space to collect yourself.
Try to keep sensitive topics under control and off the table.

Thanksgiving is a time to laugh and spend time with family, but if things get too demanding, take a look at the quick tips above on how to make things go a little smoother.

Happy Thanksgiving!
